The Pistons organization and Forgotten Harvest are hosting a hot Thanksgiving meal (Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010 from 6-8 p.m.) for 700 pre-identified Oakland County residents in need. The arena level is turning into a grand dining room with white linens and formal silverware where Pistons players, employees and community partners, members of the Pistons dance team Automotion and mascot Hooper will help serve the families. Guests will enjoy a buffet including roasted turkey, holiday ham and all the traditional Thanksgiving sides prepared by Palace chefs. Local performers and gospel choirs will entertain the guests as they enjoy their meal.
The 700 guests comprised of adults and children are being transported to The Palace from Lighthouse of Oakland County, Welcome Missionary Baptist Church, Power Company Kids Club and Gods Helping Hands. Each guest will also leave with a take away bag filled with items, including Pistons winter hats, gloves and tickets to an upcoming Pistons game.
This event wraps up two months of hunger alleviation efforts in the tri-county area beginning with a back to school event and food distribution in September at Detroit Edison Public School Academy, which also launched a statewide student backpack program providing weekend meals to students in need. The following month, the Pistons hosted multiple food distributions as a part of “Feed The Town” where Pistons players passed out food to hundreds of families in Detroit and Macomb County.
Funding for the Thanksgiving food came from the third annual Pistons Care Telethon benefiting the Food Bank Council of Michigan, a 17-hour event highlighted by the telecast of the team’s game on March 2 at The Palace. The telethon proceeds have been used to deliver over 1.5 million meals to families, children, seniors and the homeless in critical need across the state of Michigan. Food distributions in the form of mobile food pantries, hot meals, boxed meals and student snack programs have been taking place from June through December.
Thank you to the additional sponsors who helped to make this event possible: Pistons presenting sponsor PNC, Sprite, Allstate Insurance Company, The Absopure Water Company, Honey Baked Ham, U.S. Foodservice, Meijer and Trinity Transportation.
